Socorro

Socorro Islands, Mexico - January 2005 - Nautilus Explorer

The trip overall was just OK, but the last dive of the last day was the best dive experience I have ever had! Rob and I found THE spot to end our trip. I noticed a bunch of small butterfly fish congregated into what looked like a cleaning station for the Hammerheads. We had been seeing more hammers on this dive than any other but when I saw the butterfly fish I knew we hit pay dirt. I wanted to capture the sharks coming on to be cleaned but I think they were too stressed by our being there. Unfortunately I was not able to shoot any cleaning station activity but boy did we have an amazing experience watching these sharks. I was not able to capture the intensity of the experience... this was the most adrenaline pumping experience of my life. We were being buzzed and rushed by these guys and they were coming in from all sides. The pix don't do it justice, but they are what I got... I got to go digital 36 exposures run out too fast. We hung with these guys for over an hour on a 2 hour dive, rebreathers are the only way to dive.

The sharks were coming in...
closer and closer
There were many circling us

I had never seen  hammers this close
They seemed to be getting stressed
and coming in from all sides
